Understanding Proprietary Blends

If you've compared a few supplement labels, you've probably noticed some list a milligram amount next to every single ingredient, while others group several ingredients under one heading with a single combined number. That second pattern is called a proprietary blend, and it's worth understanding before you buy.

What a proprietary blend actually is

A proprietary blend is a named mix of ingredients — say, four botanical extracts — listed under one line with one total weight, instead of four separate lines each with its own amount. The label will usually still name every ingredient in the blend, in descending order by quantity, but it stops short of telling you exactly how many milligrams of each one you're getting.

This is legal under US dietary supplement labeling rules. It's a real, disclosed part of the label — not something hidden from it.

Why manufacturers use them

The most commonly cited reason is protecting a specific formulation ratio from being copied by competitors — similar in spirit to a recipe. Whether that's the actual reason in any given case isn't something we can verify from a label alone, and we wouldn't claim to know a specific manufacturer's motivation.

What you can and can't tell from one

You can tell: every ingredient in the blend (they still have to be named), the combined total weight of the blend, and — because ingredients are listed in descending order by quantity on US labels — roughly which ingredients make up more of the blend and which make up less.

You can't tell: the exact individual amount of any single ingredient inside the blend. If a blend lists five ingredients at a combined 500mg, there's no way to know from the label whether the first ingredient is 400mg and the rest are trace amounts, or whether they're closer to evenly split.

How we handle this on our own product pages

When a product we feature uses a proprietary blend, we show it exactly as disclosed — the blend name, the total weight, and every ingredient inside it in the order the label lists them — and we say plainly that individual amounts aren't available. We don't estimate, round, or imply a precision the label itself doesn't provide.
