Magnesium's role in nerve signaling is well-established mechanistically. Whether taking a supplement measurably changes nerve function in someone without a deficiency is a more open question.

Magnesium plays a documented role in normal nerve signaling: it blocks certain receptors (NMDA receptors) under resting conditions, which helps prevent excessive nerve excitation, and it supports the cellular energy (ATP) systems nerves rely on to transmit signals efficiently. This isn't a novel or speculative claim — it's basic, well-established physiology.
What the human research on deficiency and levels shows
Observational research has found real associations: people with lower serum magnesium levels tend to show measurable signs of impaired peripheral nerve function, including in studies of people with type 2 diabetes specifically. Some research has also linked chronically low magnesium to reduced blood flow in small vessels feeding peripheral nerves, which could contribute to nerve damage over time in a deficiency state.
The honest gap: deficiency correction vs. general supplementation
Here's the distinction worth understanding: this research is largely about magnesium deficiency being associated with nerve problems — it's not the same as evidence that supplementing magnesium in someone who isn't deficient produces a measurable nerve-function improvement. Researchers studying this area have themselves noted that direct intervention research — actually testing whether magnesium supplementation improves existing nerve function or symptoms — remains "insufficiently explored." The mechanism is solid; the leap to "taking magnesium will improve your nerve health" isn't yet backed by that same level of direct evidence.
